Tom Selleck is still feeling blue over this news.
Days before the final eight episodes of Blue Bloods will air, the 79-year-old reflected on the beloved series and why he disagrees with its cancellation after 14 seasons.
"I'm kind of frustrated," Tom told TV Insider in an interview published Oct. 3. "I haven't wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful."
He pointed to the No. 9 spot it held on Nielsen's Top 100 most-watched TV shows for 2023-24, and if you discounted the top three, NFL Sunday Night, Monday Night and Thursday Night Football, it would rank sixth.
"My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go," he explained. "I don't believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, 'Here's a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,' it would be almost impossible to believe."
Tom—who played New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan alongside actors Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Will Estes—also admitted it would take him time to collect his thoughts after filming the show that first aired in 2010.
"I remember after the weekend [of the final episode's shoot], I said, 'I've got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday,'" he recalled. "Well, there was no Monday. It's just going to take a while."
But the Magnum P.I. alum has also been vocal about his opposition in the past. "I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses," he admitted on CBS Sunday Morning in May. "All the cast wants to come back. I can tell you this: we aren't sliding off down a cliff. We're doing good shows and still holding our place."
Nonetheless, when CBS announced in November that the cop drama would be concluding, he took a moment to gush over his time working on the project for 13 years.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family," he shared in a statement at the time. “Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I'm grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes."
While we know the Reagan family has scheduled their last Sunday dinner, keep reading to see the fate of more TV shows.
